LDTD: Analysis at the Speed of Light

Imagine drugs of abuse coverage that includes natural opiates and synthetic opiates, benzodiazepines and street drugs too (like K2/Spice).  Using LDTD, toxicology labs can detect opiates and their metabolites as part of a complete high throughput workflow solution with turnaround up to 20 times faster for sample preparation, and up to 45 times faster for sample analysis!

In the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis (March 2011) by AstraZeneca (UK) focuses on LDTD used on "Dry Blood Spot Analysis of Metformin and Sitagliptin in human and mouse plasma". Authors (John G. Swales, et al) note: "The technique has great potential within the pharmaceutical industry not only for in vivo analysis but also for use as a rapid sample introduction technique for in vitro experiments ..."

At ASMS 2011 in Denver (June 6-10, 2011), there are numerous posters and oral presentations that address quantitative analysis, high throughput analysis, high throughput screening, dry blood spot sampling, small molecule, drug metabolism, PK assays, and other applications.  Amongst these are Sanofi-Aventis, Abbott Laboratories, AstraZeneca, and Genomatica ...

The Laser Diode Thermal Desorption (LDTD) ion source can be configured with any mass spectrometer and produce results faster than standard LC/MS techniques providing data quicker and earlier ... and new application notes generated in a leading toxicology drugs of abuse laboratory, based on clinical laboratory production since 2009 proves it.

Working without any external matrix or mobile phase, the LDTD enables rapid compound analysis. Using either 96 or 384 well plates, compatible with liquid handling systems, ultra-fast analysis is assured for natural and synthetic opiates, designer drugs, as well as proven success in ADMET, PK studies, DDI, metabolism, stability and CYP inhibition, common in early stage drug discovery and pre-clinical and clinical services.

It is equally suitable for other high throughput screening (HTS) and rapid compound identifications in pre-clinical pharmaceutical development, forensics/toxicology, food and environmental industries.

Innovative LDTD technology delivers the same sensitivity obtained by LC/MS/MS system at a lower per sample cost providing a superior price to performance ratio.

The LDTD enables researchers to quickly obtain a complete view of the properties of potential lead compounds at drug/ discovery/preclinical development, pre-IND stages, saving time and saving considerable expenses.

Highlights of LDTD:

  • High throughput performance at lower cost - in fact, so fast, it can eliminate the need to buy another mass spectrometer!
  • 96-well plates or 384-well plates are designed to be compatible with conventional sample preparation systems
  • Matrix and mobile phase free
  • No solvents or waste disposal costs
  • Lower labor costs
  • Cross-validation studies conducted by AstraZeneca and Sanofi-Aventis
  • Excellent linearity and accuracy achieved with the LDTD-MS/MS
  • The thermal desorption process takes seconds - usually 1-3 seconds.
  • Excellent linearity and accuracy achieved with the LDTD-MS/MS system
  • Comparable performance to LC/MS/MS with higher throughput.
